Centrist mayor Nicușor Dan wins Romania’s presidency in shock upset

In a stunning upset that defied pre-election polling, centrist Bucharest Mayor Nicușor Dan was elected President of Romania on Sunday, defeating hard-right nationalist challenger George Simion in a fiercely contested race that reshape the country’s political direction.
With nearly all votes counted, official results showed Dan winning approximately 54% of ballots cast, compared to 46% for Simion, a Trump-inspired firebrand whose rise had alarmed pro-European voices both within Romania and across the European Union.
Dan, a former mathematician and civil society activist, campaigned on a message of institutional reform, rule of law, and continued European integration. His surprise victory was celebrated by supporters in downtown Bucharest, where thousands gathered late into the night waving Romanian and EU flags.
“This is a victory for reason, for decency, and for a Romania that remains anchored in the values of democracy and the European family,” Dan told a jubilant crowd following the announcement of the preliminary results.
“We have shown that fear and division do not define us.”
Simion, leader of the nationalist Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), had surged in popularity by tapping into public frustration with corruption, economic inequality, and a perceived erosion of national identity.
Emulating the populist tone of U.S. President Donald Trump, Simion vowed to “make Romania great again” and frequently clashed with the press, the judiciary, and Brussels.
Analysts say Dan’s win reflects a late-breaking consolidation of moderate and urban voters, along with high turnout in the diaspora, particularly in Western Europe, where hundreds of thousands of Romanian citizens reside.
“This is a rejection of extremism and a reaffirmation of Romania’s democratic path,” said political analyst Andreea Mihăilă.
“But it also signals deep divisions that the new president will need to address quickly.”

The outcome marks a dramatic political turnaround for Dan, who had trailed Simion in early surveys and faced skepticism over his relatively technocratic style.
As mayor of Bucharest since 2020, Dan gained a reputation for fiscal discipline and a focus on infrastructure over theatrics — a stark contrast to Simion’s combative nationalism.
In his concession speech, Simion claimed the election was “influenced by foreign interests” but stopped short of outright rejecting the results.
“This is not the end,” he told supporters in a livestream. “The Romanian nation has awakened, and our movement will only grow stronger.”
Dan will take office amid growing regional tensions, persistent economic challenges, and rising disinformation — issues that both candidates pledged to tackle, albeit with vastly different visions.
The new president is expected to reinforce Romania’s commitments to the EU and NATO, and play a key role in shaping foreign policy at a time of heightened geopolitical uncertainty, particularly concerning the war in neighboring Ukraine.
Dan’s first major task will be forming a working relationship with a deeply fragmented Parliament, where Simion’s party has a strong foothold.
Whether the technocrat-turned-president can bridge Romania’s political and cultural divides remains to be seen.
For now, his supporters are savoring a victory many did not see coming.
“It gives me hope,” said Ioana Radu, a 33-year-old teacher celebrating in Bucharest’s University Square. “We’ve chosen a future rooted in unity and progress — not fear.”
