Argentina: Milei’s party wins big in midterm elections, strengthening mandate for economic overhaul

Argentine President Javier Milei’s party scored a decisive victory in midterm legislative elections, solidifying his mandate to press ahead with sweeping economic reforms despite growing public frustration over deep austerity measures.
The strong showing represents a major political boost for Milei, whose popularity had dipped in recent weeks amid rising unemployment, inflation, and street protests against spending cuts.
Preliminary results released late Sunday showed Milei’s libertarian coalition, La Libertad Avanza (Freedom Advances), expanding its presence in both chambers of Congress, tightening its grip on the legislature.
“This victory shows that the Argentine people understand the need for profound change,” Milei told supporters in Buenos Aires, pledging to “stay the course” on his plans to slash government spending, deregulate markets, and curb the country’s runaway inflation.
Analysts said the results signal continued voter support for Milei’s promise to dismantle what he calls Argentina’s “political caste” and to restore economic stability through free-market reforms.

“Despite the pain of austerity, many Argentines seem willing to give Milei more time to deliver results,” said political scientist Lucía Ferraro of the University of Buenos Aires.
The outcome is also likely to be welcomed in Washington. Former U.S. President Donald Trump, a vocal supporter of Milei, has repeatedly praised the Argentine leader’s pro-market agenda.
The Trump administration had come under criticism for backing a massive financial bailout to Argentina through the International Monetary Fund — support that now appears to have paid off politically.
Milei, a self-styled “anarcho-capitalist,” has faced fierce opposition from unions and left-leaning groups who accuse him of worsening poverty and inequality. But his midterm triumph gives him fresh momentum to push through his controversial reforms, which he insists are vital to ending decades of economic decline.
With the strengthened mandate, Milei is expected to double down on his austerity program and privatization plans — a move that could define Argentina’s political and economic trajectory for years to come.
