7 practical ways of purifying water safely at Home

Water is one of the most important resources for human life.

It supports every function in the human body, from helping digestion to regulating body temperature and keeping organs working properly.

Yet, in many Nigerian homes, getting clean and safe drinking water is not always guaranteed.

Although tap water is the most common source available, it can sometimes contain harmful germs, dirt, or contaminants due to poor treatment systems, damaged pipes, or unhygienic storage.

Consuming such water can expose people to diseases like typhoid, cholera, and diarrhoea.

For this reason, it is very important to purify water at home before drinking it.

Here are seven simple and practical ways to make water safer for everyday use.

1. Boil the water properly

One of the oldest and most trusted ways to purify water is by boiling it. Pour the water into a clean pot and place it on heat until it begins to boil vigorously.

Allow it to continue boiling for at least one to three minutes. This process helps to destroy harmful microorganisms.

After boiling, leave the water to cool on its own and then store it in a clean, covered container to prevent recontamination.

2. Disinfect with chlorine

Chlorine is widely used because it is cheap and effective. You can use unscented household bleach that contains about 5–9% chlorine.

Add about 2 to 4 drops to one litre of water, stir thoroughly, and leave it to stand for around 30 minutes.

If the water has a faint chlorine smell afterwards, it shows that the treatment worked. This method helps eliminate many bacteria and viruses.

3. Use sunlight

Sunlight can also be used to purify water, especially in areas with strong sunshine.

Fill clean, transparent plastic or glass bottles with water and place them under direct sunlight.

Leave them there for about 6 to 8 hours on a sunny day, or up to two days if the sky is cloudy. The sun’s heat and ultraviolet rays work together to reduce harmful germs in the water.

4. Filtering with cloth

If the water looks dirty or muddy, the first step is to remove visible particles. Pour the water into a container and leave it undisturbed for about 30 to 60 minutes so that the dirt settles at the bottom.

Then gently pour the clearer water through a clean cloth into another container. This does not fully purify the water but makes it cleaner and ready for further treatment.

5. Use water purification sachets

There are specially made sachets that can clean water by removing dirt and killing germs at the same time.

They are easy to use and can be very helpful, especially in emergencies or areas where other purification methods are difficult.

However, they may not always be affordable or readily available for everyone.

6. Filter with simple home filters

Using filters is another helpful method. Ceramic filters, sand filters, or other simple household filtering systems can remove dirt, parasites, and some microorganisms.

Although filtration alone may not completely make water safe, combining it with boiling or chlorine treatment gives better results.

7. Store water safely after treatment

Purifying water is not enough if it is stored carelessly. Always keep treated water in clean containers with tight lids. Avoid dipping hands or unclean cups into the water.

Instead, pour it out or use a clean utensil. Store it in a cool, shaded place to keep it free from dust and germs. Proper storage ensures the water remains safe until it is consumed.
