France’s Benjamin Bonzi pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the US Open after defeating 13th seed Daniil Medvedev in a dramatic late-night clash that turned chaotic at Flushing Meadows.

Bonzi, ranked outside the top seeds, held his nerve to seal a 6-3, 7-5, 6-7, 0-6, 6-4 victory in three hours and 45 minutes on Sunday night, booking his spot in the second round.

The tension peaked in the third set when Bonzi, serving for the match at 5-4, saw play interrupted in bizarre fashion. After faulting on his first serve, a photographer accidentally stepped onto the court. Chair umpire Greg Allensworth deemed it “outside interference,” granting Bonzi a fresh first serve.

The ruling enraged Medvedev, who stormed across the court to confront the umpire, accusing him of attempting to decide the contest unfairly. Spurred on by anger, the Russian roared back to take the third set in a tiebreak and then blitzed through the fourth with a bagel.

However, Bonzi showed remarkable composure in the deciding set, breaking at a crucial moment before serving out the match to complete a famous victory — one that will be remembered as one of the shocks of the tournament.
