World No. 1 Jannik Sinner made a blistering start to his US Open title defence on Tuesday, dismantling unseeded Czech Vit Kopriva in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1, 6-2.

The four-time Grand Slam champion, who had to retire from the Cincinnati Masters final earlier this month due to illness, showed no signs of weakness on Arthur Ashe Stadium. Sinner fired down seven aces and displayed his trademark aggressive baseline play to cruise into the second round.

In the women’s draw, top seed Iga Swiatek also began her campaign on a strong note, brushing aside Colombia’s Emiliana Arango 6-1, 6-2. The Polish star looked sharp and focused as she set her sights on reclaiming the crown in New York.

Meanwhile, American sensation Coco Gauff was given a stern test in front of a home crowd. The 20-year-old battled through a thrilling three-set clash against Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic, eventually triumphing 6-4, 6-7, 7-5 in a match that lasted nearly three hours.

With the tournament off to a dramatic start, fans can expect more fireworks as the world’s best continue their quest for glory in Flushing Meadows.
