LPPC elevates 57 legal practitioners to rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN)

In a significant development within Nigeria’s legal community, the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has elevated 57 distinguished legal professionals to the prestigious rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).
The announcement followed the committee’s 169th plenary session held on Thursday in Abuja, presided over by the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun.
According to the LPPC, 56 of the newly elevated SANs were chosen from the advocacy category, while one emerged from the academic category — reflecting a rigorous selection process that prioritizes excellence in legal practice and scholarship.
Notably, this year’s list includes only two women: Mrs. Oyinkan Badejo-Okusanya, who currently chairs the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) 2024 Annual General Conference Planning Committee, and Mrs. Chinyere Ekene Moneme.
Also among those named are Abia State’s Attorney General and ex-NBA Lagos Branch Chairman, Ikechukwu Uwanna; the immediate past Attorney General of Nasarawa State, now Secretary to the State Government, Labaran Magaji; and Osun State Attorney General, Oluwole Jimi-Bada.

In the academic category, the sole honouree is Prof. Chima Ubanyionwu.
The official swearing-in ceremony for the new SANs is scheduled for Monday, September 29, 2025, and will be conducted by Justice Kekere-Ekun.
The SAN title is a symbol of outstanding achievement in the legal profession, awarded to those who have excelled either as court advocates or as academics contributing significantly to legal education and scholarship.
According to the LPPC, three petitions were submitted against some applicants but were dismissed after review, as they were found to lack merit.
In line with the guidance from the Body of Senior Advocates of Nigeria (BOSAN), all newly appointed SANs must complete a mandatory Pre-Swearing-In Induction Programme.
