Senate adjourns plenary, to reconvene September 23

The Nigerian Senate has adjourned its plenary sessions until September 23, 2025, marking the official close of the current legislative year.
The decision was reached on Thursday following the adoption of a motion by Senate Leader, Sen. Opeyemi Bamidele, after a closed-door executive session that lasted over an hour. The motion was seconded by the Minority Leader, Sen. Abba Moro (PDP–Benue).
Senate President Godswill Akpabio confirmed the adjournment, emphasizing that it signified the end of the legislative calendar. Lawmakers are now expected to proceed on their annual recess before resuming in September for a new legislative session.

Akpabio clarified that the break applied only to plenary activities, while instructing all ad hoc and standing committees to complete outstanding reports ahead of the chamber’s return.
He emphasized the importance of utilizing the two-month recess to wrap up committee assignments so they would be ready for review and adoption once plenary resumes.
The Senate President also encouraged lawmakers to take the opportunity to visit and monitor projects within their senatorial zones and nationwide.
The senators are also expected to attend the burial of the wife of their colleague, Sen. Diket Plang, in Jos on Friday.
