A woman has been confirmed dead after gunmen opened fire on the convoy of former Anambra State governor and ex-Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige. The attack occurred along the Nkpor–Nnobi Road in Idemili North Local Government Area.

According to Fred Chukwuelobe, a former spokesperson for Ngige, the incident happened on Wednesday. He clarified that Ngige was not in the convoy when the gunmen launched the assault.

“A policeman in the pilot car was shot, and his gun and uniform were taken away by the suspected assailants, who were dressed in police and army uniforms,” he said.

He added that the woman who was filming the incident “was fatally shot by the gunmen.”

Chukwuelobe also said a shop owner who rushed out to see what was happening was hit by bullets but survived and is expected to undergo surgery soon. According to him, the injured man should “make a full recovery from the gun wound.”

“No policeman was killed, and the escort leader who was shot has been operated upon and is expected to make a full recovery,” he said, noting that “the shop owner was lucky, as the bullets didn’t lodge in his spine.”

He said Ngige has acknowledged the attack and promised that all injured victims will receive proper medical attention. The former governor also extended his condolences to the family of the woman who died while recording the scene.

Ikenga Tochukwu, Anambra police spokesperson, also confirmed the incident on Thursday, stating that officers recovered a white Mercedes-Benz SUV allegedly stolen by the attackers during the ambush.
