National grid collapse throws parts of Nigeria into darkness

Several parts of Nigeria were thrown into darkness on Monday following the collapse of the country’s national power grid, once again highlighting ongoing challenges in the electricity sector.
The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) confirmed the development in a statement shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle. According to the operator, the grid collapse led to widespread power outages across multiple states, affecting homes, businesses, and essential services.
NISO, which oversees the supply of electricity to distribution companies across the country, said power generation dropped sharply to about 50 megawatts after the collapse.

The agency added that efforts were underway to restore the grid and stabilise electricity supply nationwide.
As of the time of filing the report, NISO said only Abuja and Ibadan had 50 megawatts of electricity as against the 3,660 MW allocated on Sunday, December 28, 2025.
