Onana under fire as Manchester United settle for 2–2 draw against Lyon in Europa League thriller

Manchester United’s Europa League ambitions remain in the balance following a dramatic 2–2 draw with Lyon in the first leg of their quarter-final clash on Thursday night a match overshadowed by two costly errors from goalkeeper André Onana.

Lyon took the lead in the 25th minute when Thiago Almada’s wide free-kick unexpectedly found the back of the net after slipping through Onana’s hands in a moment of misjudgment. United responded well, turning the game around with two goals to go 2–1 up, showcasing resilience and attacking intent.

However, a late lapse from Onana saw him spill a routine save, allowing Rayan Cherki to pounce and net Lyon’s equaliser, leaving United with work to do in the second leg at Old Trafford.

Onana’s performance has once again drawn criticism, with the Cameroonian now responsible for nine errors leading to goals across all competitions since the start of last season — the highest of any Premier League goalkeeper during that period.
