Haiti gangs storm town, free 500 inmates in mass jailbreak

Armed gang members stormed the town of Mirebalais in central Haiti on Monday, overpowering local authorities and orchestrating a mass jailbreak that saw approximately 500 inmates released from prison.
A spokesman for Haiti’s national police confirmed the attack and stated that additional officers had been deployed to restore order in the town, which lies about 50 kilometers (30 miles) northeast of the capital, Port-au-Prince.
Despite police assurances that they had regained control of Mirebalais, local sources reported that many of the escaped inmates remained at large, fueling concerns over rising insecurity in the region.
Haiti has been grappling with escalating gang violence, with criminal groups controlling vast areas of Port-au-Prince.
However, Monday’s attack suggests a worrying expansion of gang operations into towns beyond the capital.

“Their influence is growing,” said a security analyst familiar with the situation.
“If these incursions into smaller towns continue, it could severely weaken the government’s ability to maintain control across the country.”
The mass jailbreak is the latest in a string of high-profile incidents underscoring Haiti’s deepening security crisis. As authorities scramble to recapture the fugitives, residents of Mirebalais remain on edge, fearing further violence.
The government has yet to announce any concrete measures to prevent similar attacks, leaving many questioning the country’s ability to curb the unchecked rise of armed gangs.
