Thailand: 5 dead in mass shooting at Bangkok food market

Five people have been killed in a mass shooting at Bangkok’s popular Or Tor Kor Market, Thai authorities confirmed on Monday. The gunman, whose identity has not yet been officially released, is also dead.

Police say the incident unfolded rapidly at the well-known market, famed for its high-quality fresh produce and seafood. Early reports from local media suggest that several of those killed were security guards stationed at the market.

The motive behind the attack remains unclear, but investigators are examining CCTV footage and questioning witnesses as part of a growing investigation.

“This was a shocking and tragic event,” a senior Bangkok Metropolitan Police officer said in a press briefing.

“We extend our deepest sympathies to the victims’ families.”

While mass shootings are relatively rare in Thailand, the country has seen a rise in high-profile violent incidents in recent years.

In 2023, a 14-year-old boy opened fire in a luxury shopping mall in central Bangkok, killing two and injuring five. A year earlier, an ex-policeman killed at least 37 people—most of them children—in a brutal gun and knife attack at a daycare centre in Nong Bua Lamphu province.

In 2020, a rogue soldier massacred 29 people and injured dozens more in the city of Nakhon Ratchasima.

Thailand has one of the highest rates of gun ownership in Southeast Asia, although firearm regulations are relatively strict.

The recent spate of shootings has renewed public debate over gun control, mental health, and security preparedness in public places.

Officials say the Or Tor Kor Market will remain closed while forensic teams complete their investigation.

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin is expected to visit the scene later today and address the nation.
