Meet five longest reigning monarchs in Nigerian history

Nigeria is a country rich in culture and history, and traditional rulers play a major role in maintaining peace, customs, and identity in their kingdoms.
Over the years, some of these royal fathers have ruled for decades, becoming not just custodians of tradition but also key figures in politics, unity, and community development.
One of such highly respected monarchs was the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91.
His death shocked many Nigerians, especially as it came just hours after the announcement of the passing of his close friend, former President Muhammadu Buhari.
His passing was met with deep mourning across Ijebuland and beyond. A prince of Ijebu, Prince Adedoyin Alatishe, expressed his sorrow on social media, posting in Yoruba: “Baami Ogbagba agbatewole.
Erin wo. Omo anikilaya saagbu”, a touching tribute that speaks of the fall of a great elephant, a symbol of royalty and strength.
Oba Adetona ascended the throne in 1960, making him one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning kings.
For over 65 years, he led the Ijebu people with wisdom, dignity, and a strong voice in national matters.
He belonged to the Anikinaiya royal house, and during his lifetime, he contributed greatly to the political, cultural, and economic growth of Ogun State and Nigeria at large.
As we remember Oba Adetona’s powerful legacy, here is a look at five of the longest-serving traditional rulers in Nigeria’s history, monarchs whose reigns helped shape their regions and left behind unforgettable footprints.
1. Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona (Awujale of Ijebuland)

Known for being outspoken, progressive, and bold, Oba Adetona helped bring modern development to Ijebuland while preserving the traditions of the Ijebu people.

2. Oba Okunade Sijuwade (Ooni of Ife)

Oba Sijuwade became the 50th Ooni of Ife in 1980 and ruled for 35 years until his passing in 2015.
He was a major promoter of Yoruba culture and played a strong role in encouraging peace and unity among Yoruba monarchs.
Apart from his royal duties, he was also a successful businessman who used his influence for community development.
3. Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III (Alaafin of Oyo)

Oba Adeyemi III ruled the ancient Oyo Empire from November 18, 1970, to April 22, 2022, making his reign last 52 years, the longest in the history of Oyo.

He became the Soun of Ogbomoso on October 24, 1973, and ruled for 48 years until his death on December 12, 2021.
Oba Oyewumi modernized Ogbomoso, supported education, and attracted major developments to the town. He was admired for his discipline and fatherly leadership.
