Tragedy in Niger as mining pit collapse claims 2 lives

A mining pit collapse in Farin-Doki, Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, has claimed the lives of two miners, the state police command has confirmed.
The victims, identified as Buhari Kano and Mallam Tasiu, were both natives of Kano State. According to the Police Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, the tragic incident occurred on Sunday while the miners were working underground.
Speaking to journalists in Minna on Monday, Abiodun revealed that the pit suddenly caved in, trapping the miners beneath the rubble. Despite efforts to rescue them, both men were confirmed dead at the scene.
According to him, police operatives from Erena Division and local residents quickly rushed to the scene and began rescue efforts.
Sadly, the victims were found lifeless and their bodies were taken to Zumba hospital for further examination.

Preliminary findings suggest the victims were illegally mining at the site on the night before the collapse.
Mr Abiodun added that a full investigation is ongoing to uncover the exact circumstances surrounding the incident.
