Breaking…Bayelsa Gov Diri dumps PDP

Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, has formally announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), ending his long-standing association with the party under which he rose to political prominence.

The announcement was made on Wednesday during a meeting at the Executive Council Chamber of the Bayelsa State Government House in Yenagoa. Governor Diri, however, did not reveal his next political destination, saying he would make that known “at the appropriate time.”

His exit from the PDP marks a major political shake-up in Bayelsa, as 23 members of the State House of Assembly, led by the Speaker, have also pledged their allegiance to the governor’s next move.

Political analysts say Diri’s resignation could alter the political balance in the South-South region, where the PDP has historically maintained a strong presence. The development has also sparked speculation about his likely defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC), which has been seeking to expand its influence in the region ahead of the 2027 general elections.
