Liverpool Football Club has been plunged into mourning following the tragic death of Portuguese forward Diogo Jota, who died earlier today in a car crash in Zamora, Spain, alongside his 26-year-old brother, André Silva.

In a statement released by the club, Liverpool described Jota’s passing as “an unimaginable loss,” expressing deep sorrow over the death of a player who had become a beloved figure both on and off the pitch.

“We are devastated. Diogo was not just a gifted footballer but a deeply respected teammate and a kind soul. He will be forever part of the Liverpool family,” the club’s statement read.

Jota, 27, joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020, quickly establishing himself as a fan favorite with his sharp instincts, versatility, and crucial goals in big games. He played a vital role in Liverpool’s Premier League title-winning campaign, and was instrumental in their FA Cup and League Cup double in the 2021–22 season.

Meahwhile, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) described Jota as much more than an amazing player, calling him an extraordinary person, respected by team-mates and opponents alike, with an infectious joy and a strong presence in his community.

UEFA has announced that a minute’s silence will be observed at all Women’s Euro 2025 fixtures on Thursday and Friday, including Portugal’s match against Spain, in honour of Jota.

Reacting to the tragedy, Portuguese Prime Minister Luís Montenegro said the deaths of Diogo Jota and his brother were both unexpected and tragic, describing Jota as an athlete who greatly honoured the name of Portugal.
