With just days to go, the city of Abeokuta in Ogun State is buzzing with anticipation as it prepares to host the 3rd edition of the African Under-18 and Under-20 Athletics Championships, scheduled to take place from July 16 to 20, 2025.

This prestigious continental sporting event will welcome young athletic talents from across the African continent, with 43 countries already confirming their participation. A total of 937 athletes and officials have registered, setting the stage for what promises to be an electrifying showcase of speed, strength, and sportsmanship.

According to a statement released by the National Sports Commission, Africa’s athletics powerhouses—Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Ethiopia, and Egypt—are all set to compete. Other notable nations joining the action include Ghana, Algeria, Morocco, Cameroon, Senegal, and Uganda.

As the host nation, Nigeria will lead the pack with the largest contingent: 60 male athletes, 50 female athletes, and 22 officials, making up a 132-member delegation. South Africa follows with a strong 100-member team, consisting of 42 male and 40 female athletes alongside 18 officials.

The event not only serves as a platform for young African athletes to shine on the international stage but also offers an opportunity for Abeokuta to showcase its hospitality and rich cultural heritage.
