U.S.-Russia talks in Saudi Arabia focus on Black Sea ceasefire

U.S. and Russian officials have begun negotiations in Saudi Arabia in an effort to advance a broad ceasefire in Ukraine, with Washington prioritizing a deal to secure a ceasefire in the Black Sea before pursuing a wider agreement.
The talks, which began on Monday, mark a rare diplomatic engagement between the two nations since the start of the Ukraine war. The Black Sea remains a critical battleground, with ongoing naval clashes and threats to global grain shipments. A limited ceasefire in the region could ease tensions and lay the groundwork for further de-escalation efforts.

While both sides remain deeply divided on key issues, the involvement of Saudi Arabia as a mediator signals a potential opening for dialogue. However, analysts warn that achieving even a limited truce will be challenging amid continued fighting on multiple fronts.
