Meet Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas, newly appointed administrator of Rivers State

In a time of political uncertainty and security challenges, Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (Rtd.) has been thrust into the spotlight as the Sole Administrator of Rivers State.

Appointed by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following the declaration of a state of emergency on March 18, 2025, Ibas now carries the responsibility of restoring order in one of Nigeria’s most politically sensitive states.

A seasoned military leader, Ibas brings decades of experience in defense strategy, crisis management, and national security.

A Decorated Vice Admiral with a distinguished career

Born on September 27, 1960, in Nko, Cross River State, Ibas has had a remarkable journey from military academy recruit to one of Nigeria’s most respected naval officers.

He joined the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) in 1979 and was commissioned as a Sub-Lieutenant in 1983,  marking the start of an illustrious military career.

Leadership roles

Ibas’ military expertise spans decades, with significant leadership roles, including:

22nd Chief of Naval Staff (2015–2021) – Strengthened maritime security and led the Nigerian Navy through critical reforms.

Flag Officer Commanding, Western Naval Command – Played a key role in Nigeria’s naval defense strategies.

Naval Provost Marshal & Chief of Logistics – Managed military resources and internal security operations.

Expert in military strategy and International defense training

His military education is just as impressive as his leadership record. Ibas holds a Master’s degree in Defence and Strategic Studies from Quaid-i-Azam University, Pakistan, and has undergone specialized training in countries like India and the United States. His courses include:

Sub-Lieutenant Technical Course (India)

Amphibious Warfare Course (U.S. Marine Corps)

National Defence Course (Pakistan)

Private life

Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas is married to Theresa Ibas, who played a significant role as the President of the Nigerian Navy Officers’ Wives Association (NOWA) during his tenure as Chief of Naval Staff.

Their marriage has been a source of unwavering support throughout his military career.

Beyond his professional life, Ibas has a keen interest in reading and strategic studies.

He is also dedicated to maintaining physical fitness and advocates for environmental preservation. His leisure activities include outdoor pursuits such as hiking and swimming.

Recognitions

For his service to Nigeria, Ibas has earned multiple accolades, including the Silver Jubilee Medal and the prestigious Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR).

His career reflects a deep commitment to national security, discipline, and leadership.
