Meet Bishop Kukah: Cleric, scholar, pro-chancellor

Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah, a distinguished Nigerian cleric and intellectual, has been appointed by President Bola Tinubu as the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal University of Applied Sciences, Kachia, Kaduna State.
His appointment highlights his vast contributions to education, governance, and national development.
Background
Born on August 31, 1952, in Anchuna, Kaduna State, Bishop Kukah has dedicated his life to religious service and intellectual pursuits.
He began his education at St. Fidelis Primary School, Zagom, before moving on to St. Joseph Minor Seminary in Zaria and St. Augustine Major Seminary in Jos, where he studied Philosophy and Theology.
He was ordained as a Catholic priest in 1976 and furthered his education by obtaining a Bachelor of Divinity from the Pontifical Urban University in Rome.
His academic journey continued with a master’s degree in Peace Studies from the University of Bradford, UK, and culminated in a PhD from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London.
Religious leadership and national service
Bishop Kukah has been an influential voice in Nigeria’s religious and social landscape.

Since June 2011, he has served as the Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, succeeding Bishop Kevin Joseph Aje.
Beyond his pastoral duties, he has played key roles in national affairs. He was a member of Nigeria’s Human Rights Violations Investigation Commission (1999–2001) and served as a secretary at the National Political Reform Conference (2005).
His efforts in peacebuilding also include his role in the Ogoni-Shell Reconciliation process and contributions to electoral reform in Nigeria.
