A touching tribute was paid to late Nigerian football icon Peter Rufai on Saturday night as Moroccan and Zambian players observed a minute’s silence ahead of the opening match of the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.

The solemn moment took place at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, just before kick-off, in honour of Rufai, the former Super Eagles goalkeeper, who passed away earlier this week at the age of 61 in a Lagos hospital.

Rufai, a revered figure in Nigerian football history, was remembered for his contributions to the national team, most notably during Nigeria’s 1994 Africa Cup of Nations victory and their debut FIFA World Cup appearance that same year.

Following the tribute, fans were treated to an exciting tournament opener as hosts Morocco and Zambia battled to a 2–2 draw in a thrilling four-goal encounter, setting the tone for what promises to be a highly competitive edition of the WAFCON.
