CAF confirms 2025 AFCON will hold in Morocco despite ongoing protests

The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Dr. Patrice Motsepe, has assured football fans across the continent that the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) will take place as scheduled in Morocco, despite the recent wave of anti-government protests in the country.
For over a week, Moroccan youths have taken to the streets in daily demonstrations demanding an end to corruption and calling for major government reforms. The protesters have also voiced frustrations over economic hardship, social inequality, and the poor state of public services such as healthcare and education.
Despite the unrest, CAF has expressed unwavering confidence in Morocco’s ability to successfully host Africa’s biggest football tournament. Speaking during a CAF meeting in Kinshasa, Dr. Motsepe reaffirmed the body’s support for Morocco, noting that the federation has no plans to move the competition elsewhere.

The 2025 AFCON is slated to run from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, across nine world-class venues in Morocco. A total of 24 national teams will compete for Africa’s most coveted football trophy, in what promises to be a thrilling celebration of African talent and unity.
Motsepe emphasized that CAF remains committed to ensuring a successful and memorable tournament, highlighting Morocco’s proven track record of hosting major sporting events.
“We have full confidence in Morocco’s readiness to deliver an exceptional AFCON. Preparations are on track, and we look forward to an unforgettable tournament,” Motsepe stated.
