The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Udom Emmanuel, the former Governor of Akwa Ibom State, over an alleged ₦700 billion fraud.

Emmanuel reportedly arrived at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, following an invitation from the anti-corruption agency.

It was gathered that the arrest is reportedly linked to a petition filed by a civil society organization, the Network Against Corruption and Trafficking, which alleged that Emmanuel had misappropriated state funds and could not account for N700 billion during his tenure as governor.

The petitioner also alleged that Udom received N3 trillion from the federation Account in eight years but left a debt profile of N500 billion and unpaid ongoing projects worth N300 billion in Akwa Ibom state.

Emmanuel, a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) served as governor from 2015 to 2023.
