Senator Kawu Sumaila dumps NNPP

Senator Abdurrahman Kawu Sumaila, representing Kano South Senatorial District, has officially announced his defection from the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP).
The lawmaker made the announcement via his Facebook page, stating that his decision was rooted in his unwavering dedication to the welfare and development of his constituents.
Sumaila, a prominent figure in Kano politics, did not immediately reveal his next political destination, but his move is already sparking speculations of a possible alignment with a major political bloc ahead of the 2027 elections.
Contacted via text message to confirm what he earlier posted on social media, he replied: “Yes, it is true. The reports regarding my defection are accurate. All politics is local, and my primary concern has always been, and remains, the welfare of my immediate constituency.”
The senator emphasized that his decision was guided by the desire to improve the lives of his people and ensure their long-term prosperity.
“I am resolutely determined to advance the lives of my people, ensuring their needs are met and their future is secured,” he added.

While details regarding his new political alignment are yet to be made public, Sumaila’s defection marks a significant development in Kano’s political landscape, where shifts in allegiance often signal deeper undercurrents within party structures and influence future electoral dynamics.
Recall that Sumaila had parted ways with the red cap movement Kwankwasiyya and the NNPP.
Sumaila, Kabiru Alhassan Rurum and Ali Madakin Gini were recently suspended by the Kwankwaso-led NNPP.
However, they rejected the suspension, saying they were not in the faction that announced the sanction.
