Meet Prof. Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, former UNILAG VC now leading NUC’s governing board

Professor Oluwatoyin Temitayo Ogundipe, the newly appointed Chairman of the Governing Board of the National Universities Commission (NUC), is a distinguished Nigerian academic, administrator and renowned botanist with decades of experience in higher education leadership.
He succeeds Emeritus Professor Olufemi Raphael Aina, who stepped down from the position less than a year after his appointment.
The appointment marks another significant milestone in the career of the seasoned academic and university administrator, who is widely known for his contributions to higher education development and institutional leadership.
Birth
Born on May 31, 1960, Ogundipe pursued his higher education at Obafemi Awolowo University, formerly known as the University of Ife.
There, he obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Botany before earning a Master’s degree and a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in the same discipline.
Seeking to broaden his administrative and management expertise, he later obtained a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Lagos, combining scientific knowledge with management training.
Academic career
Ogundipe began his academic journey at the University of Lagos as a lecturer.
Through years of teaching, research and academic service, he rose through the ranks and became a Professor of Botany in 2002.
His academic work earned him recognition within and outside the university community, while his administrative competence led to several leadership appointments within the institution.
Leadership roles at UNILAG
Before becoming vice-chancellor, Ogundipe held several strategic positions at the University of Lagos.
He served as Dean of the School of Postgraduate Studies from August 2007 to July 2011, where he supervised postgraduate academic programmes and research development.
He later became Director of the Academic Planning Unit from April 2012 to April 2016, overseeing academic policies, institutional planning and quality assurance initiatives.
In April 2016, he was appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Research), a position that further prepared him for the university’s top leadership role.

In November 2017, Ogundipe was appointed the 12th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Lagos.
As vice-chancellor, he led one of Nigeria’s most prestigious universities through a period of academic expansion, research advancement and infrastructural development.
His administration focused on improving educational standards, strengthening research output and enhancing the institution’s national and international profile.
Challenges
One of the most challenging moments of his tenure came in 2020 when the university’s Governing Council announced his removal over allegations bordering on financial impropriety and administrative misconduct.
The decision sparked widespread debate within the education sector and beyond. Following intervention by the Federal Government, an investigative panel reviewed the circumstances surrounding his removal.
The panel later concluded that due process had not been followed in carrying out the action.
Based on its recommendations, then President Muhammadu Buhari approved Ogundipe’s reinstatement, allowing him to continue his tenure until its completion in November 2022.
Achievements
Over the years, Ogundipe has established himself as a respected scholar and administrator with extensive experience in university governance.
His career has spanned teaching, research, academic planning, policy development and institutional management.
His leadership experience across multiple levels of university administration has made him a prominent voice in discussions on higher education reform and development in Nigeria.
Family life
Beyond academia, Ogundipe is a family man. He is married to Oluwaseun Ogundipe, and the couple is blessed with three children.
Appointment as NUC Chairman
As Chairman of the NUC Governing Board, Ogundipe is expected to bring decades of academic and administrative experience to the commission, which plays a central role in coordinating, regulating and maintaining standards in Nigeria’s university system.
His appointment comes at a time when stakeholders are seeking reforms that will strengthen the quality, competitiveness and global relevance of Nigerian universities.
