Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Anyaehie: The scholar, administrator leading UNIZIK

Prof. Ugochukwu Bond Stanley Anyaehie is a distinguished Nigerian academic, medical physiologist, and university administrator whose career spans teaching, research, health management, and high-level institutional leadership.
He was recently appointed as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka and this marks a significant milestone in the nation’s higher education system.
Background
Born on November 16, 1971, in Nkwere, Imo State, Prof. Anyaehie built a strong foundation in medical education from an early stage.
He earned his MBBS degree from Abia State University in 1998 before pursuing advanced studies in physiology and clinical measurements.
He went on to obtain a Master’s degree in 2004, followed by a PhD in 2009, solidifying his expertise in human physiology.
His quest for broader public health knowledge led him to earn a Master of Public Health (MPH) in 2011.
These qualifications laid the foundation for an academic career rooted in scientific inquiry, health research, and evidence-based training for future medical professionals.
Career milestones
Prof. Anyaehie began his university teaching career in 2002 and rose steadily through the ranks.
He became a full professor of Physiology and Clinical Measurements in October 2013, a testament to both his academic output and his impact on medical education.
A prolific researcher, he has published over 93 scientific papers in high–impact journals within and outside Nigeria.
His works span physiology, reproduction, clinical measurement sciences, and public health.
These contributions have not only advanced scholarship in the medical sciences but also enriched student learning across multiple universities.

Beyond teaching and research, Prof. Anyaehie is widely recognized for his administrative competence.

He has held several leadership roles, each one expanding his influence in Nigeria’s tertiary education system:
- Acting Provost, College of Medicine, Federal University of Technology, Owerri (Dec. 2023 – Nov. 2024)
- Provost & Visiting Professor (Pro Bono), College of Medicine, Imo State University (Mar. 2021 – Feb. 2022)
- Deputy Provost, College of Medicine, University of Nigeria (Aug. 2018 – July 2022)
- Director, Directorate of Research and Publications, UNN College of Medicine (2013 – 2018)
Before fully transitioning into academia, he served with distinction at the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), rising from Manager to Area Coordinator between 2001 and 2003.
His experience in health administration added important managerial competence to his academic profile.
Board memberships
Prof. Anyaehie has also contributed to shaping university policies and governance frameworks. He has served on the governing councils of:
- Imo State University, Owerri (2021)
- Paul University, Awka — as a member of both the 3rd Governing Council (2020) and the 4th Governing Council (2023)

Appointment as Vice-Chancellor of UNIZIK
On November 16, 2025, the Governing Council of Nnamdi Azikiwe University approved his appointment as the institution’s substantive Vice-Chancellor.
The decision came after a rigorous selection exercise conducted during an interactive session held on November 15, 2025, where candidates were assessed on academic merit, leadership record, and their vision for the university.
The appointment letter, signed by the Pro-Chancellor, Barrister Monsuru Olugbenga Kukoyi, confirmed that Prof. Anyaehie will serve a single, non-renewable five-year tenure.
He succeeds Professor (Dame) Carol Chinyelugo Arinze-Umobi, who served as Acting Vice-Chancellor until November 18, 2025.
With over two decades of experience across teaching, research, health systems, and governance, Prof. Anyaehie enters the office of Vice-Chancellor with a reputation for discipline, innovation, and academic excellence.
His background suggests a leadership approach that will prioritize research development, institutional stability, health sciences advancement, and student-centered reforms.
