Tinubu to address joint session of National Assembly on Democracy Day

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is set to deliver a special address to a joint session of the National Assembly on Wednesday, June 12, in commemoration of Nigeria’s Democracy Day.
The significant event will be held at the House of Representatives chamber in Abuja and will mark 26 years of uninterrupted democratic governance in Nigeria.
June 12 is a symbolic date in the nation’s political history, observed annually in honor of the 1993 presidential election, often described as the freest and fairest election in Nigeria. The election, won by the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Abiola, was annulled by the military regime of General Ibrahim Babangida (retd.), sparking years of struggle for democratic restoration.
“The Special joint sitting is scheduled to hold at the House of Representatives Chamber, National Assembly Complex, commencing at 11:00 AM, with preliminary proceedings ahead of the arrival of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, at 12:00 noon,” the statement noted.

Themed “26 years of democracy: Renewing our commitment to national development,” the 2025 Democracy Day celebration will include goodwill messages from former National Assembly leaders. President Tinubu is also expected to confer national honours on selected lawmakers during the event.
“This joint sitting represents a significant moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey,” the statement added.“It underscores the pivotal role of the National Assembly in safeguarding democratic values, fostering accountability, and advancing national development over the past 26 years of uninterrupted civil rule.”
Citizens were also encouraged to use the occasion to reflect on the country’s progress. “The House of Representatives urges all Nigerians to embrace the spirit of Democracy Day as a time for reflection, renewed patriotism, and commitment to building a more inclusive, prosperous, and united nation.”
