Tragedy as 28-year-old man electrocuted while fixing high-tension power line in Oyo

A somber atmosphere now hangs over the Odi Babaode area of Eruwa, in Ibarapa, Oyo State, following the tragic death of a 28-year-old electrician who was electrocuted while working on a 33KV high-tension power line.
According to eyewitnesses, the young technician was attempting to repair a fault on the power line when the incident occurred. Despite his expertise, the task turned fatal, cutting short a promising life.
Confirming the unfortunate development, the General Manager of the Oyo State Fire Service, Yemi Akinyinka, revealed that emergency responders arrived at the scene after the electrocution had already occurred. He described the event as deeply regrettable and emphasized the need for stricter safety protocols when working with live electricity.
“The incident occurred when the victim (electrician) was trying to rectify an electrical fault on the active power lines without shutting down the feeder,” Akinyinka said.
He further stated that the man was working on infrastructure operated by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company.

“He was electrocuted while trying to fix an electrical fault on the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company’s 33KV High tension cables in the area,” he added.
Akinyinka said the Fire Service received a distress call about the incident from one Adelanre Adeyinka.
“The distressed call was reported at 15:29hrs on Wednesday, April 23, 2025,” he noted.“Peluola Babatunde led a rescue team to the scene of the incident but unfortunately the victim had already been electrocuted. The remains of the victim have been recovered and handed over to a team of policemen from Eruwa Police Station.”
He also issued a safety reminder:
“Life has no duplicate hence it’s only trained engineer or technician that should shoulder the responsibility of handling active electrical equipment,” Akinyinka stressed.
