Christian Chukwu Okoro, one of Nigeria’s most respected football legends, has passed on at the age of 74.

As fans mourn the loss of the former Super Eagles captain and coach, here are ten important things to know about his remarkable life and career:

1. He died at 74 years old

Chukwu passed away in 2025 at the age of 74. His death was confirmed on April 12, though the cause is yet to be disclosed at the time of this report.

2. He was born on January 4, 1951

Born in Enugu State, Chukwu’s journey to football greatness started in his early years despite family resistance.

3. First Nigerian Captain to lift the AFCON trophy

He made history in 1980 by becoming the first Nigerian captain to win the Africa Cup of Nations, after Nigeria defeated Algeria 3–0 in the final.

4. He spent his entire club career with Enugu Rangers

From 1972 to 1981, Chukwu was a loyal defender for Enugu Rangers, becoming a key part of their golden era and helping them win several local and continental titles.

5. Earned 54 caps for Nigeria

Between 1974 and 1981, Chukwu played 54 times for the Nigerian national team and scored five goals as a commanding centre-back.

6. He started football despite parental disapproval

As a young boy, his parents discouraged him from football and even made him hawk plantains to distract him. But he still followed his passion, shining in school football.

7. Coached both Nigeria and Kenya

After retirement, he ventured into coaching. He led the Nigerian U-17 and senior national teams, and also managed Kenya’s national team in the late 1990s.

8. Took Nigeria to the 2004 AFCON semifinals

As Super Eagles coach, he guided the team to a semifinal finish at the 2004 AFCON tournament, though he later faced criticism during the 2006 World Cup qualifiers.

9. Survived a major health scare in 2019

In his late 60s, Chukwu suffered a serious health challenge. Philanthropist Femi Otedola and the Nigerian Football Federation supported his successful treatment in the U.S.

10. He was a devoted family man

Chukwu is survived by his wife and four children, two boys and two girls. He remained respected in the football community and stayed in touch with his teammates until his passing.
