Myanmar clashes persist despite post-earthquake ceasefires

Despite a temporary ceasefire declared to facilitate earthquake relief efforts, Myanmar has witnessed continued clashes between the military junta and ethnic rebel groups.
Reports indicate that since the ceasefire’s inception, the military has conducted at least 14 attacks, as documented by the UN Human Rights Office.
The military has accused rebel factions of violating the ceasefire terms. Major General Zaw Min Tun, the military council’s spokesperson, stated, “We will respond if military bases are attacked without reason.”
Conversely, rebel groups contend that their actions are defensive, prompted by the military’s offensive maneuvers. The Ta’ang National Liberation Army (TNLA), a member of the Three Brotherhood Alliance, reported that recent military airstrikes and artillery attacks compelled them to respond.

The ceasefire, brokered with China’s mediation, aimed to provide a window for humanitarian aid following the devastating 7.7-magnitude earthquake on March 28, which resulted in over 3,500 fatalities and thousands of injuries. However, the continuation of hostilities has severely hampered relief operations. Heavy rains and ongoing conflict have further complicated efforts, raising concerns about disease outbreaks among displaced populations.
International actors, including the United Nations and neighboring countries, have called for unimpeded access to affected regions to deliver essential aid. The UN’s humanitarian chief, Tom Fletcher, emphasized the urgent need for coordinated relief strategies to address the escalating humanitarian crisis.
As the situation unfolds, the fragile ceasefire’s breakdown underscores the deep-seated tensions and mistrust between Myanmar’s military and ethnic armed groups. The international community continues to monitor developments closely, advocating for renewed dialogue and adherence to ceasefire agreements to alleviate the suffering of Myanmar’s civilian population.
