A devastating fire tore through a nursing home in northeast China’s Hebei province on Tuesday night, leaving 20 people dead and sparking a wave of grief and calls for accountability across the country.

The blaze broke out in a facility in Chengde city and raged for approximately two hours before being fully extinguished, according to state media reports. Nineteen others who were in the building survived and have been taken to hospital for observation. No serious injuries among the survivors have been reported so far.

Authorities have launched a full investigation into the cause of the fire. A person identified as being in charge of the nursing home has been detained for questioning, though no further details have been released as of Wednesday morning.

The tragedy has ignited public outrage and mourning on Chinese social media platforms, where thousands of users expressed sorrow for the elderly victims and demanded a thorough and transparent probe into the incident. Many raised concerns about fire safety standards in care facilities for the elderly, especially in smaller cities and rural areas.

“This is not just a tragedy — it is a reminder of the urgent need to improve safety and oversight in our elder care system,” one widely shared comment read.

Hebei provincial authorities said they would conduct comprehensive safety inspections across nursing homes and similar institutions in the wake of the fire.

This incident is the latest in a string of deadly accidents in China that have raised questions about safety regulations and enforcement in the care of vulnerable populations.
