Tinubu appoints Oloriegbe as NHIA chairman

In a significant move for Nigeria’s health sector, President Bola Tinubu has appointed Dr. Ibrahim Oloriegbe as the Chairman of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA).
The announcement was made in an official statement on Sunday by Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy.
Oloriegbe, a former senator representing Kwara Central, will serve an initial four-year term, with his appointment taking effect on March 11, 2025.

During his tenure in the National Assembly, Oloriegbe played a crucial role in shaping health policies. He served as the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Health from 2019 to 2023 and also led the Joint National Assembly Committee on Health, contributing significantly to legislative efforts aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system.
“He holds a Master’s in Coaching and Consultation from the University of Oxford, UK, and HEC, Paris, and a Bachelor’s of Medicine and Surgery from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Kaduna State,” the statement read.
The statement further highlighted Oloriegbe’s professional affiliations, noting that he is a member of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), Association of General and Private Medical Practitioners of Nigeria (AGPMPN), Nigeria Venereal Disease Association, Guild of Medical Directors of Nigeria, International AIDS Society (IAS), and the Africa Health Leadership and Management Network.
