Gov Fubara’s calm approach should not be mistaken for weakness – Rivers SSG

The Secretary to the Rivers State Government (SSG), Dr. Tammy Danagogo, has cautioned against misinterpreting Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s calm and diplomatic leadership style as a sign of weakness.
Danagogo’s statement comes in the wake of ongoing political tensions in the state, with critics—particularly the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike—questioning Fubara’s approach to governance.
Danagogo, whose role in Fubara’s administration has been scrutinized—especially regarding his decision to sign a letter inviting lawmakers for a meeting with the governor—defended his actions. Wike had dismissed the letter as “useless.”
Speaking to journalists during the commissioning of Okrika Grammar School, Danagogo clarified that his actions were within his official responsibilities as SSG.
“There was nothing wrong with the SSG writing a letter for an informal meeting,” he stated, emphasizing that such communication fell under his purview.
A lawyer from the Kalabari region, Danagogo also served as SSG during Wike’s second tenure as governor and noted that he performed similar duties under the previous administration.
He stressed that his response was not politically motivated but aimed at addressing misinterpretations of his role.
Commending Governor Fubara for maintaining composure despite provocations—such as the recent locking of the state assembly complex that obstructed his budget presentation—Danagogo noted that previous governors might have reacted more aggressively.

He assured Rivers residents of the government’s commitment to their welfare and economic stability, stating that Fubara’s approach was driven by a desire to prevent policies that could negatively impact the people.
Meanwhile, tensions escalated on Saturday as protesters tore down billboards welcoming Wike to Abalama, a Kalabari town where he was scheduled to hold a Thanksgiving service.
The incident followed alleged decision by the Amayanabo of Abalama, King Dr. A. B. Big Tom Tom JP, to decline the proposed Thanksgiving and Civic Reception planned in Wike’s honour.
In a letter dated March 12, 2025, addressed to the state police commissioner, the monarch expressed surprise at learning about the event through social media, despite being the paramount ruler of the community.
Emphasizing the growing political instability in Rivers State, the king reiterated the community’s resolution to ban political gatherings for security reasons.
“I and my council of chiefs also resolved that no political activity should be held in Abalama because of the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State,” he wrote, adding that he had made a public radio announcement to reinforce this stance.
Despite these warnings, Wike arrived in the Ijaw town on Saturday under heavy security, with many residents staying away from the venue.
