A 79-year-old British man has died after being struck by a vehicle from Kenyan President William Ruto’s motorcade in a hit-and-run incident in Nairobi.

The victim, identified as Edgar Charles Frederick, was hit on Thursday while walking along a main road in the Kenyan capital. Authorities confirmed that the vehicle involved was part of the presidential convoy.

Police detained the driver, who was operating a support vehicle in the motorcade. He was later released on bail as investigations continue. Officials have not disclosed further details about the circumstances of the crash or why the driver left the scene.

Kenyan authorities have yet to comment on whether the president was aware of the accident at the time. The British High Commission in Nairobi said it was providing consular support to Frederick’s family.

The incident has sparked calls for greater accountability in road safety, particularly involving government convoys, which are often criticized for reckless driving.

Kenyan law mandates strict traffic regulations, but enforcement remains inconsistent. In recent years, concerns have grown over high-profile road accidents involving government vehicles.

Authorities have assured the public of a full investigation into the incident.
