British couple released after 8 months in Taliban custody

A British couple who spent nearly eight months in detention in Afghanistan under Taliban custody have been released following Qatari mediation, officials confirmed on Friday.

Peter Reynolds, 80, and his wife Barbie, 76, were stopped on 1 February while travelling home in Afghanistan, where they have lived for nearly two decades.

The couple were transferred into Taliban custody and held until this week, when they were freed after what Taliban officials described as “judicial proceedings.”

The Taliban did not specify the alleged offence that led to their detention, saying only that the pair had “broken Afghan laws.” Their release came after Qatari officials brokered negotiations with the Taliban leadership.

A Qatari official said the couple would first travel to Doha for medical checks before continuing on to the UK, despite having maintained a long-term home in Bamiyan province.

Peter and Barbie Reynolds married in Kabul in 1970 and dedicated much of their lives to Afghanistan. For the past 18 years, they ran a charitable training programme designed to provide education and skills development in rural communities.

The project was approved by Taliban authorities after the group regained power in 2021.

British diplomats thanked Qatar for its role in securing the couple’s release.

“We are relieved that Peter and Barbie Reynolds are free and will soon be reunited with their loved ones,” a UK Foreign Office spokesperson said.

The case has underscored the precarious environment for foreigners in Afghanistan under Taliban rule, where international mediation has often been required to secure the release of detainees.
