Mozambique police open fire on opposition protest, injuring dozens

At least a dozen people were injured after Mozambican police violently dispersed a protest led by opposition leader Venâncio Mondlane, the runner-up in last year’s disputed presidential election, Mondlane’s team and a civil society group reported on Wednesday.
Eyewitnesses and Mondlane’s aides said police fired live rounds at his convoy and the anti-government protesters who had gathered in the capital, Maputo. The demonstration was part of ongoing opposition efforts to contest the legitimacy of the election results.
As of Thursday, neither the police nor government authorities had commented on the use of force against protesters. The lack of response has further fueled concerns over political repression in the country.

The protests coincided with President Daniel Chapo’s expected signing of a political agreement with other parties, aimed at resolving months of unrest over the disputed election. Chapo, who took office in January, has faced continued opposition from Mondlane’s supporters, who claim the election was marred by irregularities.
Mozambique has experienced recurring post-election tensions, with opposition groups alleging widespread fraud and demanding greater transparency. Civil society organizations have called for an independent investigation into the security forces’ response to protests and potential human rights violations.
With pressure mounting on Chapo’s administration, observers say the coming days will be crucial in determining whether dialogue can ease political tensions or if further unrest will follow.
