UN warns of “catastrophic consequences” amid reports of Israeli plan to reoccupy Gaza

A senior United Nations official has issued a stark warning of “catastrophic consequences” if Israel proceeds with reported plans to fully reoccupy the Gaza Strip, as tensions soar following the collapse of ceasefire talks with Hamas.
Speaking before the UN Security Council, Assistant Secretary-General Miroslav Jenča described the prospect of expanded Israeli military operations as “deeply alarming” and said such action could further endanger the lives of Palestinian civilians and Israeli hostages still held by Hamas.
“The humanitarian situation in Gaza is already dire,” Jenča said. “A full-scale military reoccupation would only deepen the crisis, risk countless more lives, and jeopardize any hopes for lasting peace in the region.”
His comments came after multiple Israeli media outlets reported that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is pushing for a complete takeover of Gaza to decisively defeat Hamas.
“The die has been cast. We’re going for the full conquest of the Gaza Strip — and defeating Hamas,” a senior Israeli official reportedly said.

Netanyahu is expected to meet with his security cabinet on Thursday to discuss the proposal, which would require formal approval before any operation is launched.
While some analysts believe the plan could be a tactical maneuver to pressure Hamas back into negotiations, others suggest it may be aimed at consolidating support from Netanyahu’s far-right coalition partners, who have long advocated for stronger military action in Gaza.
The reports have sparked concern among international observers, with fears that renewed escalation could derail ongoing humanitarian efforts and ignite broader regional instability.
The UN and several world leaders have urged restraint and renewed commitment to diplomatic solutions, warning that another major military campaign would bring devastating consequences for both Palestinians and Israelis.
