British backpacker admits to fatal e-scooter crash in Perth

A 25-year-old British backpacker has pleaded guilty to killing a man in Australia after riding an e-scooter while more than three times over the legal alcohol limit.

Alicia Kemp was heavily intoxicated when she struck 51-year-old Thanh Phan from behind on a pavement in Perth’s city centre in May, a court heard.

Kemp and a friend had been drinking on a Saturday afternoon before being removed from a bar for drunkenness. Later that evening, the pair hired an e-scooter, with Kemp at the controls. She was travelling at an estimated 20–25km/h (12–15mph) when the collision occurred.

Mr Phan, a father of two, fell and struck his head on the pavement. He died in hospital two days later from a brain bleed. Kemp’s passenger was also injured, sustaining a fractured skull and broken nose, but survived.

The court was told Kemp’s blood alcohol concentration was more than three times the legal limit for driving. Sentencing is expected to take place at a later date.
