Background

Born on January 19, 1966, in Modakeke, Osun State, Wale Adeniyi’s journey began in one of Nigeria’s culturally rich towns.

He laid a solid academic foundation at the University of Ife (now Obafemi Awolowo University), graduating in 1987 with a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations.

His quest for knowledge took him to USI Lugano, Switzerland, where he earned a Master’s in Communication Science in 2013, positioning him for international engagement and strategic leadership.

Entry into Customs and rise to prominence

In 1990, Adeniyi joined the Nigeria Customs Service as a Cadet Officer.

His early postings included TinCan Island Port in Lagos, where he served diligently as an Assistant Superintendent from 1991 to 1996.

Demonstrating sharp analytical skills and policy acumen, he was transferred to the Economic Relations, Research and Planning Department at Customs Headquarters, Abuja, a move that set the tone for his leadership path.

By 2001, he had become the National Public Relations Officer, a role he held for 15 years.

Under his watch, the Customs Service underwent a media transformation, improving its public perception and communication strategy significantly.

Leadership experience

Adeniyi has served in several strategic roles, including:

  • Deputy Commandant, Nigeria Customs Command and Staff College, Gwagwalada

In 2020, he led the operation that intercepted over $8 million in undeclared foreign currency at Lagos airport, a landmark seizure that reinforced his reputation for operational effectiveness and enforcement.

Appointment as Comptroller General

His commitment to reform and innovation did not go unnoticed. In January 2023, Adeniyi was appointed Acting Deputy Comptroller-General in charge of Strategic Research and Policy.

Just five months later, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed him Acting Comptroller General of the NCS on June 19, 2023.

By October 19, 2023, he was confirmed as the 31st Comptroller General of Customs, taking on the challenge of driving modernization in Nigeria’s customs operations.

International recognition and WCO Chairmanship

Adeniyi has long been a familiar face at the World Customs Organisation (WCO), attending top-level meetings from 2010 to 2019, including:

His consistent global engagement culminated in a historic appointment in June 2025 as Chairman of the WCO Council during its 145th/146th sessions held in Brussels.
