Prominent Kano-born industrialist and elder statesman, Alhaji Aminu Alhassan Dantata, has passed away at the age of 94 after a long battle with age-related health complications.
His passing was announced on Saturday by Uba Tanko Mijinyawa, Deputy National Treasurer of the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), through a post on social media.

1. Early life
Born on May 19, 1931, Alhaji Dantata hailed from the influential Dantata family in Kano.
He was the son of Alhaji Alhassan Dantata, a legendary merchant known for pioneering large-scale trade in West Africa.
2. Start in business
He launched his business career as a produce buyer under the family enterprise, Alhassan Dantata and Sons Ltd, eventually expanding into sectors such as banking, agriculture, petroleum, real estate, and construction.
3. Industrial development leadership
In 1962, Dantata joined the Steering Committee of the Nigerian Industrial Development Bank and was later appointed to its board of directors, helping to shape the country’s industrial foundation.
4. Political involvement
He was elected into the Northern House of Assembly in 1966. The following year, he was appointed as a Commissioner in Kano State, serving until 1973.

He also contributed to national policy as a member of the 1979 Constitution Drafting Committee.

Alhaji Dantata led numerous international trade delegations, playing a significant role in promoting Nigeria’s private sector interests abroad and fostering global business relationships.
