Panic and grief gripped Kano in the early hours of Saturday following a deadly explosion believed to have been triggered by a military-grade mortar bomb.

The blast, which tore through a densely populated area, left at least five people dead and 15 others injured.

According to eyewitnesses, the explosion occurred just after dawn, shattering windows, damaging buildings, and sending residents fleeing in fear. Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene, including medical personnel, firefighters, and various security agencies working to evacuate victims and secure the area.

Kano State Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, confirmed during an on-site briefing that the explosion was suspected to have originated from military weaponry—specifically a mortar bomb.

“I received a call that something serious had happened. When I arrived, I found that it was a suspected explosion—possibly a military mortar bomb. Fifteen people were injured, and unfortunately, five died,” he said.

Rescue teams swiftly transported the injured to nearby hospitals, while investigators began combing the site for evidence.

“The situation is still under investigation, but we understand the vehicle involved may have come from Yobe State,” the Commissioner added.

Preliminary assessments indicate the explosive may have been carried by a trailer. However, authorities have yet to determine whether the truck belonged to the military or a contractor.

“Preliminary findings suggest the explosive material was being transported by a trailer, but it remains unclear whether the vehicle was carrying military personnel or contractors,” he said.

While the exact origin and purpose of the ordnance remain uncertain, Bakori urged residents to remain calm as investigations continue.

“Security agencies are currently investigating the incident. The facts will be clearer once the investigation is completed,” he stated.
