The Commissioner of Police for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Command, CP Ajao S. Adewale, has issued a stern warning to all officers under his command, condemning acts of illegal detention, extortion, and interference in civil matters, especially land disputes.

This directive comes in response to mounting complaints from members of the public regarding unlawful detentions for bailable offences, the extortion of complainants and suspects, and inappropriate police involvement in civil cases that fall outside the scope of criminal investigation.

Describing such conduct as a flagrant violation of citizens’ constitutional rights and contrary to the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, CP Adewale emphasized that the FCT Command will no longer tolerate such abuses of power.

In a memo circulated to Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), and Heads of Departments (HODs), the CP directed the immediate review of all detainees in custody for minor or bailable offences.

‎He reiterated that the police must not intervene in civil matters, particularly land-related disputes, which lie outside their jurisdiction. Any officer in violation, and supervisors who fail to enforce this directive, will be held accountable. The CP also condemned the demand for payment before investigating cases, warning that such acts constitute extortion and abuse of office. Offenders will be prosecuted.

‎Members of the public are also cautioned against offering bribes, as this is a criminal offence under Section 118 of the Penal Code Act. Citizens are advised not to misuse the Police for debt recovery or personal vendettas.

‎All residents of the FCT are urged to support the Command’s efforts to ensure professionalism, accountability, and respect for human rights. Reports of misconduct should be sent to the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) at 08107314192.
