Police resume tinted glass permit issuance with upgraded digital system

The Nigeria Police Force has officially resumed the issuance of Tinted Glass Permits (TGP) nationwide through a newly enhanced digital platform, following directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun.
The announcement was made on April 30 by the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in response to widespread complaints from motorists about alleged harassment by officers over tinted windows.
According to the statement, the decision reflects the need to adapt to modern vehicle designs, many of which now come with factory-fitted tinted glass.
The upgraded system aims to streamline the permit process while enabling law enforcement to differentiate between lawful users and those who may exploit tinted windows for criminal activity.
The statement noted that tinted vehicles have often been used to perpetrate crimes such as kidnapping, armed robbery, and other security threats, obstructing law enforcement operations.
The newly reactivated system, accessible via possap.gov.ng, allows applicants to process their permits online.

The application process includes identity verification through the National Identification Number (NIN) and Tax Identification Number (TIN), biometric capture, and background checks. Approved applicants will receive a QR-coded digital permit within 72 hours.
To ease compliance, a 30-day grace period has been granted starting May 1, 2025, after which enforcement will begin.
The Police further warned that any officers involved in extortion or misconduct during enforcement would be sanctioned according to the Force’s disciplinary procedures.
The Inspector-General of Police assured Nigerians that the initiative aligns with the Force’s commitment to technology-driven and people-oriented policing, encouraging the public to cooperate for safer roads and improved national security.
