Noboa wins Ecuador’s presidential run-off, secures full term amid gang crackdown

Centre-right President Daniel Noboa has secured victory in Ecuador’s presidential run-off election, granting him a full four-year term after first taking office in a snap election in November 2023.
Noboa, 36, described the win as “historic” during a celebratory address to supporters. “Ecuador has chosen peace, security, and progress,” he said.
Since assuming office, Noboa has led a sweeping military crackdown on violent criminal gangs that have turned Ecuador into one of the most dangerous countries in Latin America. His hardline stance on security has earned him both domestic support and international attention, especially as Ecuador struggles with surging homicides and prison riots linked to drug trafficking cartels.

His left-wing opponent, Luisa González, has refused to concede, alleging electoral fraud without presenting evidence. “We do not accept these results. The voice of the people has been manipulated,” she claimed during a press conference.
Election observers from regional organizations have not reported any significant irregularities in the voting process. Analysts say González’s refusal to accept the outcome could inflame political tensions, but Noboa’s strengthened mandate is likely to embolden his security agenda moving forward.
