Democratic-backed judge wins Wisconsin race, dealing blow to Musk

Wisconsin voters have elected Democratic-backed judge Susan Crawford to the state Supreme Court, according to projections, in what was the most expensive judicial election in U.S. history.
Crawford’s victory over conservative opponent Brad Schimel ensures that liberals maintain their 4-3 majority on the state’s highest court, a crucial balance of power in a battleground state where key legal battles—including those over voting rights and redistricting—are expected in the coming years.
The race, which saw more than $100 million spent by candidates and their allies, became a national political flashpoint. Billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk, a close adviser to President Donald Trump, played a prominent role in fundraising for Schimel’s campaign, personally contributing $20 million.

His involvement made him a target of Democratic attack ads, which accused him of trying to influence the judiciary in favor of conservative interests.
Crawford’s victory is seen as a significant setback for Musk and conservative activists who sought to shift the ideological balance of the court ahead of the 2024 presidential election. Meanwhile, Democrats are touting the result as a win for judicial independence and progressive policies.
The election underscores Wisconsin’s pivotal role in national politics, with both parties closely watching the state ahead of the upcoming presidential race.
