Tinubu gives up all salaries to support Nigeria’s armed forces on 74th birthday

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced a major welfare initiative for Nigeria’s Armed Forces as he marked his 74th birthday.
The President said he would donate all his salaries since assuming office to support military personnel and their families.
The announcement was made in a personal statement on Saturday. Tinubu used the occasion to recognise the sacrifices of soldiers across the country.
“On this my 74th birthday, I celebrate the valiant men and women of our Armed Forces,” he said.
The President also directed the Accountant-General of the Federation to open a special account. The fund will be used to improve the welfare of military personnel. It will cover those currently serving, those injured in operations, and families of officers who died in service.
According to the statement, the initiative is designed to provide direct support. This includes care for wounded soldiers and financial assistance to widows, widowers, and children of fallen heroes.
The move is expected to complement existing military welfare and insurance packages already in place.

Tinubu said his personal contribution would serve as the foundation of the fund. He confirmed that all his earnings as President so far would be paid into the account as seed money.
He also called on other stakeholders to support the initiative.
“I call on our Governors, members of the National Assembly, the private sector, my friends and all well-wishers to support this initiative. Details of the account will be made available in due course,” he stated.
The President stressed that the effort is beyond charity. He described it as a national responsibility to those who risk their lives daily to protect the country.
“We must never forget those who stand in harm’s way for our peace, nor the sacrifices borne by their families. This is not charity. It is duty. And we will fulfil it,” Tinubu added.
