Kwankwaso declares January 23 ‘World Betrayal Day’ after Kano Gov Yusuf’s exit from NNPP

The National Leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has declared January 23 as “World Betrayal Day” following the resignation of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, from the party.
Kwankwaso’s remark appears to be a direct reaction to Yusuf’s exit, a move that has stirred fresh political tension within the NNPP and the Kwankwasiyya Movement, particularly in Kano — the party’s traditional stronghold.
Governor Yusuf formally announced his resignation from the NNPP on January 23, 2026, citing deepening internal crises and persistent leadership disputes within the party.
However, reports indicate that the governor may be heading to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a development many observers say could significantly reshape Kano’s political landscape.
Speaking to his supporters at his Miller Road residence in Kano, Kwankwaso said the idea of designating the date was inspired by reactions from social media users who described the governor’s departure from the NNPP as an act of betrayal.

According to him, one particular post stood out and influenced the decision. He said, “None caught my attention more than one who posted, suggesting that we declare January 23 annually as World Betrayal Day.
“Therefore, as the leader and grand patron of this movement, I hereby declare that I fully support the declaration,” he said.
Kwankwaso further stated that the day would be observed annually with special activities aimed at reminding members of the events surrounding the governor’s exit.
Recall that Governor Yusuf announced his defection on Friday, attributing his decision to growing internal crises and leadership disagreements within the NNPP.
While supporters of the governor have hailed the move as a strategic step towards aligning with the Federal Government, loyalists of Kwankwaso have condemned it as a betrayal capable of increasing political uncertainty in Kano State.
