The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has arrested a suspected car thief and recovered a Toyota Hilux stolen in Abuja after a swift operation that led officers to neighbouring Kaduna State.

The breakthrough followed a coordinated response by operatives of the Maitama Police Division, who tracked down the stolen vehicle within hours of the reported theft.

According to a statement issued by the FCT Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, the incident occurred on June 20, 2026, when the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Maitama Division, CSP Altine Daniel, received a distress call at about 1:45 p.m. reporting the theft of a white 2014 Toyota Hilux with registration number BWR 712 CV.

The complainant informed the police that the vehicle had been parked in the Wuse II area of Abuja at about 1:30 p.m. but was discovered missing just four minutes later. Witnesses reportedly saw an unidentified individual driving the vehicle away.

Upon receiving the report, the DPO immediately mobilised a team of officers to the scene while police formations and security checkpoints across the FCT were alerted. Stop-and-search operations were simultaneously activated along major entry and exit routes to prevent the suspect from escaping with the stolen vehicle.

The police also deployed digital tracking technology, which enabled them to trace the vehicle to Kubacha in Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State.

By approximately 3:30 p.m. on the same day, police operatives successfully recovered the stolen Toyota Hilux and arrested one suspect in connection with the theft.

The suspect is currently in police custody alongside the recovered vehicle, while investigators continue efforts to uncover the full circumstances surrounding the incident and identify any accomplices who may have been involved.

Reacting to the successful operation, the Commissioner of Police for the FCT Command urged residents to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to safeguard their vehicles and other valuables.

The police advised vehicle owners to install functional tracking devices, avoid leaving valuables unattended inside their vehicles, and promptly report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station.

Residents were also encouraged to contact the FCT Police Command through its emergency numbers—08032003913 and 07057337653—to report emergencies or security concerns.

The latest arrest underscores the FCT Police Command’s continued efforts to combat vehicle theft and other criminal activities through rapid response, intelligence gathering, and the use of technology.
