Atiku visits ex-president Jonathan in Abuja after Guinea-Bissau trip

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on Saturday visited former President Goodluck Jonathan at his Abuja residence, marking their first public interaction since Jonathan returned from his election observation mission in Guinea-Bissau.
Atiku shared photos of the meeting on his verified social media pages on Sunday, writing: “It was a pleasure catching up with former President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday evening, following his recent return from Guinea-Bissau.”
The meeting, though described as a private courtesy visit, comes at a politically significant moment.
Jonathan, who governed Nigeria from 2010 to 2015 before losing his re-election bid to Muhammadu Buhari, has maintained cordial relationships across political divides since leaving office.

Atiku’s visit follows his recent resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and subsequent defection to the African Democratic Congress (ADC). He accused the PDP of drifting away from the ideals of its founding vision and has since been received by the ADC leadership.
Political observers say the timing of the visit is noteworthy, especially amid reports suggesting that Atiku may clinch the ADC’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.
With both men being key figures in Nigeria’s democratic evolution, their latest interaction has sparked renewed speculation about political alignments, alliances, and the unfolding shape of the 2027 electoral landscape.
