Roosevelt Ogbonna is a distinguished Nigerian banker and corporate executive widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in Africa’s financial services sector.
He currently serves as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Access Bank PLC, a position he assumed in May 2022, making him the leader of one of Africa’s largest and most dynamic banks.

Born on April 14, 1974, Ogbonna hails from the Igbo tribe and boasts an impressive academic record.
He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Banking and Finance from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and later obtained a Master’s in Business Administration from IMD Business School in Switzerland.
He also holds an Executive MBA from the Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business and a Master of Laws (LL.M) in International Corporate & Commercial Law from King’s College, London.

Career Journey
Ogbonna began his banking career at Guaranty Trust Bank before joining Access Bank in 2002.
Over the years, he rose steadily through the ranks, holding several critical roles including Executive Director of the Commercial Banking Division in 2013 and Group Deputy Managing Director in 2017.

His appointment as Managing Director/CEO in 2022 cemented his reputation as a thorough professional with over two decades of versatile banking experience covering treasury, commercial, corporate, and investment banking.

Beyond his leadership at Access Bank, Ogbonna has served on the boards of several institutions, including Access Bank UK Limited, Access Bank (Zambia) Ltd, and the Central Securities Clearing System Plc.
He has also represented the bank on the boards of the African Finance Corporation and FMDQ Group Plc.
He was a Non-Executive Director of Access Holdings PLC until mid-2025, when he stepped down in line with new Central Bank of Nigeria corporate governance rules.

Despite resigning from the board, he remains a significant shareholder in Access Holdings, with an estimated 158 million shares valued at about $2.7 million.
